FrancisKnight were appointed by Great Place: Lakes & Dales to commission public art by younger creatives as part of a programme to use art, culture and heritage to attract and retain young people to live and work in the area.

Photographic artist Mary Woolf, based in Settle, was appointed to design the signs ahead of the Road World Championships which started on 22nd September 2019 in Harrogate. The best professional cyclists in the world raced through Craven on various routes throughout a week of competition.

The signs produced by Morelock signs in Wolverhampton, were commissioned to mark the Craven district boundary and celebrate the distinctiveness and beauty of the landscape. In exploring the district Mary became interested in the ridges and skylines, creating a panoramic view that is split into four along the N/E/S/W lines.  The resulting designs depict the outstanding natural beauty of the areas highlighting Bentham, Buckden, Skipton and Wigglesworth all with their own distinct key features.

As Mary commented, My aim is to inspire people to look closer at their surroundings - to take more notice of the experience of being in a place.”
