Visit to the Timber Shed

Working on the Chatham Placemaking Project we're delighted to be working with designer maker Andrew Lapthorn. Andrew is collaborating with Lead Artist Chris Tipping to produce a series of benches for New Cut, Railway Street and Military Road. The benches are a combination of granite and timber and this week we were lucky enough to take a look in the timber sheds at the Dockyard where we are hoping to source the timber.  The benches have been inspired by 'Chatham Timbers' and robust bespoke nature of materials used within the Dockyard. So it was great to go back to that source of inspiration and discuss what timbers we could use with Andrew, a master craftsman based there.

Creative Mallorca

A few days away in Mallorca recently highlighted the importance the island places on the artists, the public realm and creativity.  From the Museum of Modern Art and its expansive collection to the playful public artwork and furniture found in the many squares. My hotel even displayed some quirky artworks.

Gallery Hopping

A week of FrancisKnight birthdays and with it comes a few days off and a chance to check out some independent galleries in London.  First up, back to The White Cube in Bermondsey to see The Crystal Land by Josaih McElheny and Fragments by Ibrahim Mahama.  Stunning galleries that easily show off large scale installations both thought provoking and beautiful. Next stop Victoria Miro in North London, where Do Ho Suh’s Passage/s was well worth the steps to the top floor gallery space – featuring a stunning walk through configuration of nine structures. And finally Antoni Tàpies at the Timothy Taylor gallery in Mayfair showing late works by the celebrated Catalan artist – bold and abstract, perfectly framed with the title Revulsion and Desire.

Anselm Kiefer Exhibition at The White Cube

A quick trip to Bermondsey last week and we managed to catch the Anselm Kiefer show Walhalla at The White Cube.  It was a stunning and apocalyptic exhibition fit for the season; dark and lead heavy with the skeletons of life bulldozed into piles of rusting hospital beds, bikes and starched splattered hanging garments. Believe us when we say it was a real treat on a cold February afternoon!
